AbstractHong Kong maintains a 'split' legal profession inherited from England by having two distinct but complementary branches of legal practitioners, namely the barristers and the solicitors. They are public, independent, autonomous and are regulated by their respective professional bodies, namely the Hong Kong Bar Association and the Law Society of Hong Kong. Both branches of the profession have made rules and implemented policies regarding standards of admission, practice and discipline as well as post-qualification professional development and education. This paper discusses the backgrounds and outlines the legal/ policy frameworks of the Bar Association's Advanced Legal Education and the Law Society's Continuing Professional Development.
