AbstractThe villagers' protest against predatory land-taking in Wukan in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong attracted wide attention, both internationally and domestically. The reconciliatory approach taken by the Guangdong government to dilute and divert social tension is highly regarded. The Wukan event is commonly regarded as one of the most significant rights protection cases in China to date because it highlights the potential of law and dialogue in easing social tension.
