AbstractSleep hygiene is a behavioral strategy widely used for improving insomnia in the western countries. It includes guidance on controlling behavioral and environmental factors that may improve sleep quality and sleep duration. How ever,Inner Canon of Huangdi has different theories about improving sleep. It stated that the basic theories of sleep w ere the flow of Ying Qi and Wei Qi,and Yin Heel Vessel and Yang Heel Vessel,follow ing the Taoist health preserving thoughts to guide the treatment of insomnia. Both sleep hygiene and Inner Canon of Huangdi emphasize the importance of regular w ork and rest schedule,appropriate daytime physical activity,avoiding too full or too hungry,avoiding irritating foods,and emotion controlling. Sleep hygiene focuses more on how the sleeping environment affects sleep,but Inner Canon of Huangdi focuses on follow ing the interchanging of Yin and Yang to preserve health. The combination of both may optimize their effects.
