AbstractDegeneration of dopaminergic neuron is one of the major clinical characteristics of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Abnormal iron deposition in the mid-brain nuclei was postulated to be the cause of neurodegeneration. In this study, we employed quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) as a tool to examine iron content of different brain nuclei. Iron concentrations in terms of magnetic susceptibility of the 6 brain nuclei were presented. ROI analysis revealed high iron concentration in substantia nigra of PD patients which confirmed the clinical findings. This study also demonstrated QSM as a potential tool for evaluation of in vivo iron metabolism in neurodegenerative disease.
