Abstract | City-regions and their complex urban metabolisms both drive and respond to the challenges
posed by climatic and environmental change. Drawing-upon preliminary research, this paper
briefl y sketches how global cities, particularly three in Asia—Hong Kong, Singapore and
Taipei—are responding to arguably one of the most critical sustainability challenges facing the
planet today: carbon dioxide (C02) management associated with the risks of global and regional
environmental change. The discussion is intended to provoke citizens, offi cials and policymakers
into envisioning alternative pathways towards the sustainable Asian city of tomorrow. |
