AbstractBackground and objective: Maxillary swing nasopharyngectomy is an efficacious salvage for recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma after radiotherapy. Exposed raw bone in the clivus after the operation can lead to osteoradionecrosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of pedicle nasoseptal flap (NSF) to cover the raw bone of the clivus after nasopharyngectomy. The results were compared with the control group using free inferior turbinate mucosal graft. Method: Retrospective case controlled study. Results: There were 8 patients in the NSF group and 8 matched controls. 75% of the NSF were successfully taken. Heavy post-operative nasal crusting were observed in 1 patients with viable NSF and 5 patients in the control group. There was significant decrease in nasal washout time from 14.25 minutes to 9.17 minutes in the study group using NSF (p=0.029). Conclusion: Pedicle nasoseptal flap provides an alternative method for coverage of raw bone after maxillary swing nasopharyngectomy.
