| Abstract | Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian in Chinese) is a common used herbal medicine for the treatment of damp-heat syndromes in Traditional Chinese Medicine for more than two thousand years. Berberine is the most abundant alkaloid and the major active compound in Coptidis Rhizoma. Studies focusing on the anti-cancer effect and the underlying mechanism of Coptidis Rhizoma and berberine has been dramatically increasing in recent years. The anti-cancer effect of Coptidis Rhizoma and berberine can be summarized as preventing carcinogenesis, inhibiting proliferation, inducing apoptosis, preventing angiogenesis, and suppressing migration and invasion. Recent publications of each anti-cancer effects will be discussed in detail in this review. Moreover, the preventive and therapeutic effects of Coptidis Rhizoma and berberine in hepatocellular carcinoma will be highlighted. |
