Abstract | In 2000 and 2001, influenza vaccine production and distribution were delayed, negatively impacting efforts to vaccinate target groups for which vaccine coverage levels were already unacceptably low. These delays revealed the fragility and unpredictability of the existing production and distribution systems and highlighted the need to consider changes. The CDC has worked closely with many partners and stakeholders to attempt to address the problems that the delays created and to make preparations should delays arise in the future. A number of more substantial measures may be needed to strengthen the existing systems to ensure an adequate and timely supply of influenza vaccine every year. |
