With reference to the growing and more-diversified queer representations in Korean media, this thesis focuses on the features of queer representation and on the cultural discourses of sexuality embedded in these representations. The main research question asks how the Korean media represents the queer. The thesis adopts a queer-centered approach to investigate Korean queer representations in multi-genre works, from films and TV dramas to music videos.
The thesis is divided into two main themes—normativity and transgression in queer representations. I argue that sexual normativity can be an overt feature in queer-identified works while queer transgression exists in heterosexual-based media. In the first two discussion chapters, Chapters Two and Three, I investigate media works portraying openly queer characters, from an independent movie made by an openly gay director to a mainstream family drama written by a popular heterosexual writer. I suggest that features of sexual normativity are largely embedded in these queer-identified texts, including representations of heteronormativity and homonormativity. In Chapters Four and Five, I shift the focus to non-queer-identified media works. I examine widely popular dramas with heterosexual romance stories and hit K-pop music videos presented by heteronormative K-pop girl groups. Contrary to their heterosexual exteriors, I argue for the gender transgression and queer sexualities concealed in the representations of these heterosexually identified works.
The thesis aims at expanding the Korean media research scope by using the queer spectrum in its analysis. The adoption of a queer scope will contributes to the literature of Asian queer studies by joining the queer Asian studies dialogues through the discussion of specific social–cultural factors in an under-investigated Asian country—Korea.
