AbstractThe objective of this study was to compare the peak of bone mineral density (BMD) between Chinese male and females with and without Down syndrome (DS). Method: Polynomial regression models were fitted to determine the age that BMD reached peak level. Results: Whole body BMD peaked at 24-27 years of age in DS males and 30-32 years in DS females, in comparison with 19-23 years in males and 31-36 years in females from the normal group. That was equivalent to about 4-5 years late and 2-3 years early in the start of BMD decline in males and females with DS, respectively. The BMD peak values for males and females were 9% and 8% lower in the DS group than the normal group. Implications: Males and females with DS experienced different timing of BMD decline but both had a lower peak BMD that may explain their increased risk of osteoporosis.
