Residents' challenges from different stakeholders' perspectives: an adaptive leadership framework

Abstract

The Adaptive Leadership Framework suggests empowering and supporting residents for person-directed care (Corazzini et al., 2014). Using this as a lens, we analysed data from “stakeholder engagement sessions” to describe different stakeholders’ perspectives about adaptive challenges facing residents. The data included group and one-on-one interviews with nursing home resident/families, staff, and administrators: the first round sought descriptions of challenges with care-planning processes and the second round sought feedback on an emergent conceptual framework. A two-cycle coding approach was adopted (Saldaña, 2012). Multiple adaptive challenges were described, such as residents’ perceptions that staff did not care about them while providing help with activities of daily living. Often, these challenges were interpreted by other stakeholders as technical challenges, such as being short-staffed, rather than being adaptive challenges requiring staff behavioural change. The findings demonstrate the usefulness of the Adaptive Leadership framework for supporting implementation of person-directed care planning in nursing homes.
