AbstractAutomobile city is intentionally to be set as a self-contained living and working environment for limited number of workers. However, what I found is automobile city functions are too simple, which cannot meet the diverse need for different people. Because of former settlement of regional government-owned automobile factories, Anting town of China, was set goal to be an independent international automobile city. With headquarter of Shanghai-Volkswagen settlement, it has become the most famous automobile town of China. The new town plan consists of the enlargement of factory areas, land transformation from cultivation to real estates and construction of public infrastructure. However, three problems emerge out following the operation of new planning. Three categories of people can be concluded here, they are local villagers, migrant labor workers and central Shanghai citizens. The workers from car factories are mainly non-local people which are not as planned situation. This leads to that people working inside the towns are migrant labor workers. Besides, people who are attracted in living here are not always working inside the towns because of poor infrastructure and sole industry. Three separation means the land use separation based on different people. The direct outcome is the limited user amount in diverse facilities of Anting. Both private and public oriented facilities are in difficult operation now. The limited people flow without diversity killed the variegated living experience and developing direction for towns. In order to shift life separation of three kinds of people to life integration with all people attendance, strategy is proposed to create integrated destinations with different functions and without any specific groups of people orientation. Through the strategy, the integrated destinations reach the goal that diverse people can gather to enjoy daily living inside and increase retention time during all day. Retail and food with diverse shapes are applied, housing with government funding are applied, and multi-functional public facilities are applied.Public transportation system is reorganized to promote people access to integrated destination, forming a walkable neighborhood. The strategies are applied into three sites with specific problems.
