AbstractThe surface enhanced laser desorption ionization (SELDI) mass spectrometry was performed by using ProteinChip ® technology, to screen for differentially expressed proteins in serum sample. Serum samples from relapsed nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients were compared with serum samples from patients with complete remission of NPC, lung cancer and thyrotoxicosis. NPC was a malignant tumor of poorly differentiated epithelial cells. It was shown that serum profiling by SELDI ProteinChip technology can identify new protein makers in the diagnosis of relapse of nasopharyngeal cacinoma. Two specific proteins at 11.6 and 11.8 kD that had strong correlation with relapse were identified.
