Abstract | The present study examined the role of visual attention span among Chinese students with and without dyslexia. The performance in tasks of visual attention span, literacy and reading-related cognitive skills of 25 Chinese dyslexic primary students were compared with 25 students with the same chronological age (CA) and another 25 students with comparable reading level (RL). Current results revealed that visual attention span accounts for a significant unique variance in Chinese reading after controlling for the age, IQ and students’ performance in various cognitive abilities, including phonological skills, rapid naming and visuo-orthographic skills. Current results also support that visual attention span deficit is a cognitive deficit contributing to dyslexia in Chinese.
