Is ageing in place a sustainable policy to the low-income elderly in Hong Kong?

Abstract

The Ageing problem is of most concern to many developed countries. As a developed city, it is concerned that Hong Kong would become a “Super-age” city after 2040 and it is predicted that there will be a sharp increase in the demand for elderly service. So, there are many voices currently that show concern on how to provide a full-scale post-retirement strategy to cater for elderly needs. In Hong Kong, the majority of the elderly belong to low-income elderly; many of them live in the public housing estate under the Hong Kong Housing Authority and the Hong Kong Housing Society. To traditional Chinese people, the concepts of Ageing in Place build deeply in their heart and they would rather remain living in original community rather than Elderly Hostels. So, the core of this research is to examine if Ageing in Place can be a sustainable policy in Hong Kong. Current Ageing in Place issues would be examined using Sustainable criteria. The opinion from social workers, volunteers and housing provision organization would also be account and analyze such that recommendation would be made based on sustainable development on Ageing in Place in Hong Kong.
