Abstract | Biomedical materials are biocompatible metals, polymers, ceramics (including glasses and glass-ceramics), and composites. They are used in the biomedical field in various forms: particles, fibers, thin films, coatings, dense and non-porous, porous, etc. The size of implants and medical devices ranges from tens of nanometers to tens of centimeters and their shapes and geometries vary tremendously. Many biomedical materials also require surface modification for achieving desired biological responses. Therefore, numerous techniques have been investigated and developed for the fabrication of biomedical devices from different types of biomedical materials. This article gives a comprehensive coverage of major manufacturing technologies for all types of biomedical materials. |
