AbstractThis review summarizes our recent theoretical and experimental investigations of sublattice substitution of alloying elements (V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, W, Ga etc.) in titanium aluminides γ-TiAl and α2-Ti3Al. Predictions of site preference of the ternary additions in TiAl using binding energy data and the Bragg-Williams model were compared with ALCHEMI measurements. The site occupancies of Cr, Mn and V in TiAl were found to be sensitive to alloy composition, in contrast to those of Nb and Fe. A method of estimating the (γ + α2) two-phase equilibrium in ternary Ti-Al-X alloys using the site occupancies of alloying elements in the two phases was developed. Quantitative comparison between prediction and measurement of phase fractions and the boundaries of the (γ + α2) two-phase field for a series of ternary systems with small amounts of alloying additions showed good agreement.
