AbstractIt is my honor to be invited by Professor Han Min and Professor Hironao Kawai to present a paper on Chinese kinship at an international conference at the National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka, Japan in 2014. I am not sure whether I deserve such an honor because I have not published anything about Chinese kinship except one article on the nature of Chinese marriage 20 years ago (Wong 1995). I, however, have been and am interested in the topic and have developed a habit of reading ethnographies on Chinese kinship before bed-time. Given my limited knowledge about Chinese kinship, I guess the only thing that I can do in this chapter is to address a basic if not trivial question about Chinese kinship: What is Chinese Kinship and What is Not?, which becomes the title of this chapter.
