Abstract This dissertation constitutes an examination on the patriotic behavior of the Hong Kong Chinese during 1919 to 1926. The dissertation will discuss how political events taking place in China, such as the May Fourth Incident and the May Thirtieth Incident, stimulated the patriotic feelings of the Chinese in Hong Kong, and will analyse their patriotic behavior. During 1919 to 1926, the patriotic behavior of the Hong Kong Chinese was mainly due to responding to the patriotic event in mainland China, such as the May Fourth Incident in 1919 and the May Thirtieth Incident in 1925. Besides, the changing political climate in mainland China, particularly the co-operation of the Kuomintang of China (or the Nationalist Party of China) and the Chinese Communist Party, had much impact on the patriotic behavior of Hong Kong Chinese. This dissertation consists of seven chapters. The first chapter defines the scope of the dissertation. The second chapter discusses the May Fourth Incident in China and the co-operation of the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party. The third chapter examines the relation between the Chinese and the Government in Hong Kong. The fourth chapter investigates the patriotic behavior of the Chinese in Hong Kong responding to the May Fourth Incident. The fifth chapter explores the patriotic behavior of the Chinese in Hong Kong in Canton-Hong Kong Strike. The sixth chapter gives an analysis of the patriotic behavior of the Chinese in Hong Kong during 1919 to 1926. The last chapter concludes the dissertation with a discussion on the characteristics of the patriotic behavior of the Chinese in Hong Kong.
