Abstract | The concept of body image includes how we perceive, think, feel and ultimately behave due to our own conception of our physical image. Body image dissatisfaction is when there is a difference between our perceived body image and our desired body image. The prevalence of body image disorders in athletic populations remains worryingly high, although rather poorly documented. Unfortunately the assessment of body image, especially in athletic populations, has not progressed significantly, and many researchers still rely on traditional/out-dated instruments. Modern 3D scanning technology together with volumetric assessment gives potential for body image assessment to be conducted. The novel iPad SomatoMac application uses male and female somatotype photographs that allow for more comprehensive estimates of body image dissatisfaction than existing figural images/silhouettes and photographic/pictorial scales. |
