AbstractDeep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism are rare in children particularly in the Chinese population. We describe a 14-year-old previously healthy Chinese boy who developed deep vein thrombosis with pulmonary embolism after minor trauma. Because the index of clinical suspicion was low, the diagnosis of DVT was overlooked in the initial presentation. This case illustrates the importance of recognizing this seemingly rare condition in Chinese paediatric population. Furthermore, contrast enhanced spiral CT scan was found to be safe, efficient and accurate in making the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism.
