Abstract | Objective: To study the risk factors associated with biochemical recurrence (BCR) in patients with positive surgical margin (PSM) after radical prostatectomy (RP).
Patients & Methods: Patients who underwent radical prostatectomy from 2002 to 2017 in Queen Mary
Hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with PSM after RP were included for analysis. Demographic and pathological data were analysed.
Results: Out of 466 patients identified, 136 of which had PSM. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level (p = 0.001), PSA density (p = 0.001), pathological T staging (p = 0.007) and percentage of involvement of tumour at biopsy (p = 0.012) were shown to be significant factors in predicting BCR. PSA level of 8.8 ng/dL, PSA density of 0.2 ng/ dL/mL and percentage of involvement of tumour of 20% at biopsy were the cutoffs in predicting BCR
Conclusion: Pre-operative PSA, PSA density, pathological T staging, percentage involvement of
tumour in specimen are factors associated with BCR in patients with PSM. These should be taken into account when counselling patients for adjuvant radiotherapy. |
