AbstractThe present study is an exploratory study of the use of Cantonese interjections by Cantonese-speaking preschool children. Using cross-sectional data from the HKU-70 corpus (Fletcher, Leung, Stokes, & Weizman, 2000), conversational samples of 70 Cantonese-speaking preschool children were analysed. Interjections were present in 91% of the children and produced from the age of two. Sixteen different interjections and 10 pragmatic functions of interjections were identified. The pragmatic functions of interjections were investigated based on the study by Norrick (2009). The frequency, types and functions of interjections increased with age.
