AbstractThe present study applied a multi-level analytic approach to picture sequence description tasks in healthy Cantonese speakers. 149 discourse language samples elicited by the task “Broken Window” were extracted from the Cantonese AphasiaBank. They were analyzed using 16 measures at four levels of discourse, namely the lexical, syntactic, discourse levels and informativeness. The results indicated significant main and interaction effects of age and education level on discourse performance. Significant correlations within and across different levels of discourse were identified. Significant predictors of discourse informativeness were discussed. The normative performance established allowed future comparison with performance of people with aphasia for assessment. The identification of predictors of discourse informativeness provided insights into language rehabilitation.
