AbstractThis article investigates the concept non-returner (anāgāmī) in the early Buddhist and Theravāda soteriology and cosmology. The main sources investigated for this article are the Pāli canonical and commentarial literature. My main thesis is the concept of non-returner has gone through several stages of evolution and development in the several strata of Buddhist literature. This article argues (i) originally, the concept of non-returning was closed to the stage of arahantship, gradually it was distanced from its original place and the distance between the two stages is widen. (ii) Buddhist cosmological realm, in this context, the five pure-abodes (suddhāvasa), were originally more psychological than ontological.
