AbstractThis chapter discusses what sociolinguists and other scholars of language can gain from using the concept of desire as a way of understanding language use. It critiques earlier work on language and sexuality to argue that the concept of desire is both theoretically rich and empirically accessible. It discusses different theories of desire, and gives examples of studies that have used the concept of desire in highly original and illuminating ways.
