AbstractThis dissertation explores the effectiveness of two public rental housing estates redevelopment projects – So Uk Estate and Shek Kip Mei Estate. A preliminary assessment of the overall social and environmental sustainability of these two public rental housing estates is given. It shows that the generation of a socially and environmentally sustainable community is the key element for successful redevelopment. Thus, HKHA shall formulate a sustainable redevelopment policy not only based on cost-and-benefit analysis and site characteristics, but also make careful attention to the following dimensions of sustainable development i.e. housing design and planning; quality of housing and living environment; energy conservation; confrontation of social cohesion and integration; development of neighborhood connectedness; and building community empowerment and engagement.
