Abstract | The study investigated the effect of expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) on the
phonatory function in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Data were excerpted from
the existing data set of a study examining the effect of EMST on speech function in patients
with Parkinson’s disease previously reported (Tong, 2018). Data of 20 participants were
randomly selected, and pre-treatment and post-treatment speech samples were used for longterm
average spectral (LTAS) analysis. An array of LTAS parameters including mean
spectral energy (MSE), spectral tilt (ST), and first spectral peak (FSP) were extracted to
objectively evaluate possible treatment effect. Results revealed no significant change in all
LTAS parameters after EMST treatment, suggesting a lack of effect of EMST on the
phonatory function of PD individuals. Further studies exploring the effect of EMST on severe
PD individuals including the use of perceptual measures are suggested.
