AbstractSepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection which can rapidly lead to multi-organ failure and death. In 2017, 49 million incident cases of sepsis were recorded worldwide and 11 million sepsis-related deaths were reported, representing 20% of all worldwide deaths. The United Kingdom’s (UK) National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (2015) reported that 75% of sepsis cases was community acquired sepsis (CAS) and occurred in patients who were admitted through the hospital front door. The COVID pandemic is associated with over 4.5 million deaths of which the majority have died from sepsis. This presentation will touch on aspects of personalised pathophysiology, panoromic features, haemodynamics and the 2021 surviving sepsis campaign guidelines for managing shock and septic shock. It will focus on aspects of care that are most relevant to emergency medicine, the practical challenges and potential solutions.
