AbstractThis study examined the relationships of three types of reasoning skills—conditional inference, hypothetical syllogism, and relational reasoning—to geometric deduction among 97 tenth graders from a local co-educational secondary school in Hong Kong. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that relational reasoning has a unique predictive power of geometric deduction even after controlling for nonverbal intelligence, mental rotation, conditional inference, and hypothetical syllogism. However, conditional inference and hypothetical syllogism do not account for a significant amount of variance in geometric deduction after controlling for the said variables. The discussion emphasizes the pedagogical implication of placing stronger focus on relational thinking in the learning and teaching of geometric deduction.
