Abstract | In Hong Kong, although accessibility is regarded as an issue with growing importance due to the rapid growth of the aging population and increasing need for universal design, incorporating barrier free access to build heritage is often challenging since many of the heritage sites are not designed for those with physical disabilities.
As observed, many Chinese temples in Hong Kong, of varying sizes, are highly visited places by diverse worshippers and visitors. Among whom are those mobility-challenged due to physical disabilities or old age. However, seldom these temples address the accessibility issue, despite the legal requirements for access to premises under Hong Kong’s Disability Discrimination Ordinance. There is an urgency to examine and address this issue as a necessary task for achieving sustainable conservation.
This dissertation will identify the accessibility issues of Chinese temples, and address these needs by proposing recommendations of internationally accepted design solutions for improving accessibility to heritage buildings. Two case studies, Tin Hau Temple in Yau Ma Tei and Pak Shing Temple in Sheung Wan, will be utilized.
Through research of the two cases, universal access solutions are proposed in respect of the temples’ cultural significance and other practical factors. Issues and challenges of implementing barrier free access will be exemplified. Indeed, providing universal access to historic Chinese temples is never a simple task but requires deliberate consideration, and cooperation with various stakeholders.
