Abstract | A family of thermotropic liquid crystals are obtained by linking covalently disc-like hexaalkoxytriphenylene derivatives with carbohydrate termini. Structure-dependent formation of mesophases is obtained for these discogens which are able to incorporate hydrophobic molecules inside their hydrophobic microenvironments. Incorporating other dendritic saccharides and gaining a better understanding of the resulting supramolecular organization should broaden the scope and generality of these chiral discotic liquid crystals. |
