AbstractA dicationic macrocycle containing two NH2+ centers can insert itself spontaneously inside bisparaphenylene[34]crown-10 to form a highly ordered, stable, 1:1 complex in solution, as well as in the solid state (see picture), The self-assembly of this superstructure, wherein the mean planes of the two macrocycles are aligned approximately orthogonally to one another, augurs well for the use of supra-molecular assistance to covalent synthesis in the construction of interlocked molecular compounds beyond catenanes and rotaxanes.
