AbstractTwo for the price of one! The diazaperopyrenium dication behaves dichotomously in a homo- and heterophilic manner, allowing for complexation with itself and a variety of π-electron-rich donors. This chameleonic characteristic, in addition to its electronic properties, leads to self-assembled nanowires in the solid state, as well as to its acting as a template for aromatic crown ethers to form a [3]- and two [2]rotaxanes (see picture).
