AbstractThis dissertation presents a case study of Tsz Lok Estate in Hong Kong to explore the challenges and opportunities in realizing "aging in place" during the COVID-19 pandemic. "Aging in place" refers to the idea that the elderlies are given sufficient resources to live independently and comfortably in their own homes as they age. With the pandemic, the issue of aging in place has become even more urgent, as the aged are at higher risk of contracting the virus and facing isolation due to social distancing measures. The study employs a mixed-methods approach that encompasses literature review, observational study of the built environment, surveys and in-depth interviews. During the observational study, the physical features of the estate has been observed including common areas, outdoor spaces, and housing units. Although the study did not involve participatory observation, the observational study helped to provide a better understanding of the living environment in Tsz Lok Estate and complement the surveys and in-depth interviews to explore whether the perception of the elderly towards aging in place has been changed due to the pandemic. The results indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic has presented both challenges and opportunities for the elderlies to age in place in Tsz Lok Estate. Analysis of the interview data revealed various challenges, including social isolation, financial difficulties and restricted access to health services which have adversely affected not only the physical and psychosocial health of the elderlies but also reduced their desire to age in place. Moreover, the research found that elderlies who were more reliant on family assistance, found themselves harder to overcome living obstacles due to increased social distancing measures and economic instability. Besides, the study also identified several key factors that impacted the effectiveness of aging in place, including health status, social interactions, and housing design. Furthermore, the interviewees reported increasing use of technology for communication and entertainment during the pandemic, which has proven helpful in enhancing the implementation of aging in place and reducing negative emotions. These findings emphasized the importance of promoting district support programs and providing additional assistance to elderlies who were heavily rely on family support. Additionally, virtual support groups, use of technology such as telemedicine and wearable device which can link up to health monitor and financial assistance can be provided to elderlies and their families.
