Abstract

Background: When dental students are asked to treat real patients, there may be a few of difficulties, including fear of not being prepared enough. Compared to adult patients, one treatment that students are not familiar with in paediatrics is stainless steel crown (SSC) preparation. Whenever many students are doing SSC, it is found that there is a long line of students asking questions.

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of watching clinical videos of paediatric treatments, specifically on SSC tooth preparation and SSC crown modifications as a head start, for students’ better preparation and understanding.

Method: Videos were filmed for demonstration on SSC tooth preparation and SSC crown modifications. Year 5 and year 6 students of the University of Hong Kong were invited to answer an anonymous online survey on their preferences on online video learning materials, including sound, speed, and on where the demonstration should be, along with the effectiveness of watching demonstrations of procedures, as the two years are the only years that have clinical paediatric sessions.

Results: Two videos that were around 2 minutes each were made. Both year 5 and year 6 preferred voice over and faster speed. However, year 5 preferred to watch videos on tooth model while year 6 preferred if videos were demonstrated on real person. Most of the responders from both years have given positive response.

Conclusion: Students may benefit from watching learning materials with voice over, in fast speed, and on real person or tooth models.
