AbstractThe expansion of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) into a Third Runway System firstly adopts the Deep Cement Mixing (DCM) method to improve the ground at existing airport since 2016. This project site is located at the HKIA third runway to construct a 2.6km long automatic people mover (APM) and baggage handling system (BHS) Tunnel. The project involves extensive excavation lateral support (ELS) and water cut-off system. However, the dewatering stage did not success at the early stage. The groundwater level was not able to draw down to DCM top level. In this study, analysis is carried out based on the pumping test result at three locations within the tunnel project to understand the hydraulic conductivity of soil stratus at DCM ground. Field observation, discussion on the hydrogeology of superficial hydrogeology at DCM improved ground, and suggestions on carrying out pumping test at DCM improved land would be provided.
