Abstract

Academic philosophy in Hong Kong began in the early twentieth century. However, the discipline was in a neglected state before the Second World War and gradually expanded only afterwards. The development of philosophy in Hong Kong is shown to be heavily influenced by colonial politics and changing government policies on higher education and deeply intertwined with the city’s unique cultural and historical context. This article also highlights the legacy of humanism left by some of the founding Chinese scholars of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and their impact on Hong Kong society and education.
