Abstract | This research examines the intersection of feminism and social media discourse in
China through a comparative analysis of comments on feminism on two prominent
platforms: Hupu and Xiaohongshu. Utilizing advanced text mining techniques,
including BERTopic and sentiment analysis, the research explores the differences in
topics and sentiments expressed in comments on feminism across these platforms.
The research reveals clear variances in topics discussed on Hupu, with a greater
emphasis on heated and divisive conversations, including "Radical Feminism" and
"Misogyny and Misandry". These topics show critical and sometimes contemptuous
views towards feminism. On the other hand, Xiaohongshu fosters more emotional and
supportive conversations, focusing on topics, such as "Encouragement" and
"Kindness", demonstrating a strong identification with feminist values and a desire for
social change. The sentiment study indicates that Hupu has a mostly neutral to slightly
negative sentiment, but Xiaohongshu has a typically favorable sentiment, suggesting a
friendly community environment. These differences might be explained through the
lens of ingroup and outgroup dynamics, highlighting the influence of platform
demographics and user identities on the nature of feminist discourse. The findings
contribute to the understanding of how platform-specific factors shape public
perceptions of feminism in China, offering insights into the complex and evolving
attitudes toward gender equality in contemporary society.
