Analysis of the Meaning of the Korean Connective Ending “-(ess)eto”

Abstract

<p>This study investigates the meaning of the Korean connective ending“-(ess)eto”. “-(ess)eto” is used with facts, non-facts, and counter-facts. When its antecedent is a fact, it has a meaning of concession and contrast. When its antecedent is a non-fact, it has a meaning of concession andconjecture. When its antecedent clause is a counter-fact, it has a meaning ofconjecture and condition. As a result of analyzing the Sejong corpus, “-eto”was found to be used as “[fact]-eto [fact]-nunta,” “[non-fact]-eto[fact]-nunta,” “[non-fact]-eto [non-fact]-ul kesita,” “[counter-fact]-eto[non-fact]-ul kesita,” and “[counter-fact]-eto [counter-fact]-ul kesita.”Additionally, “-esseto” was found to be used as “[fact]-esseto [fact]-nunta,”“[non-fact]-esseto [fact]-nunta,” “[non-fact]-esseto [non-fact]-ul kesita,”“[counter-fact]-esseto [non-fact]-essul kesita,” and “[counter-fact]-esseto[counter-fact]-essul kesita.”<br></p>

(었)어도’는 사실, 비사실, 반사실을 선후행절로 한다. ‘-(었)어도’가 사실을선행절로 할 때는 기대 부정의 양보 의미와 함께 대조 의미가 나타난다. ‘-(었)어도’가 비사실을 선행절로 할 때는 양보 의미와 가정 의미가 나타나며, ‘-(었)어도’가 반사실을 선행절로 할 때는 양보와 가정의 의미가 나타나거나 가정과조건의 의미가 나타난다. 그리고 세종 말뭉치를 분석한 결과, ‘-어도’는 ‘[사실]-어도 [사실]-는다’, ‘[비사실]-어도 [사실]-는다’, ‘[비사실]-어도 [비사실]-을것이다’, ‘[반사실]-어도 [비사실]-을 것이다’, ‘[반사실]-어도 [반사실]-을 것이다’ 등의 구조를 이루었다. 그리고 ‘-었어도’는 ‘[사실]-었어도 [사실]-는다’,‘[비사실]-었어도 [사실]-는다’, ‘[비사실]-었어도 [비사실]-을 것이다’, ‘[반사실]-었어도 [비사실]-었을 것이다’, ‘[반사실]-었어도 [반사실]-었을 것이다’ 등의 구조를 이루는 것으로 나타났다.
