The Future of Public Housing Design: AI’s Role in Reimagining Choi Hung Estate

Abstract

<p>WIth the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), our architecture field is experiencing transformative changes. This change became essential in the design studio I co-taught with Professor Christian J. Lange at the University of Hong Kong, where we explored the potential of AI in reshaping Hong Kong’s public housing estates. As the government is going to redevelop Choi Hung Estate and other public estates in Hong Kong, our studio investigated how AI can reimagine the old housing developments with a new perspective. This process of merging human intelligence with AI as assistance offers alternative perspectives on how architects can rethink their role in shaping the built environment.</p>

隨著數碼時代的來臨，人工智能（AI）技術逐漸融入建築設計，重新定義建築師的角色。在我與Christian J. Lange教授於香港大學共同教授的設計工作室中，透過結合不同的AI程式，學生不僅能迅速生成設計概念，還能從AI的意外生成的結果中獲得靈感，達到AI協助人類設計的可能性。另一方面，我們亦發現AI可以被用作與居民溝通的橋樑，幫助建築師能即時以及更準確地回應使用者的需求。
