Book Chapter: Translanguaging

TitleTranslanguaging
Authors
Issue Date4-Apr-2025
Abstract

Translanguaging has evolved from a pedagogical philosophy to a theory of language and communication, and an analytical perspective that spotlights the dynamic use of various multilingual, multimodal, multisensory and multi-semiotic resources by speakers to create for meaning- and sense-making. This article will discuss how the notion of translanguaging has developed and expanded over time. In discussing the implications of using translanguaging as a conceptual and methodological perspective, the article will also explore the idea of transpositioning, and how it is shaped by other relevant theories including positioning theory, the concept of liquid modernity, and translanguaging as a practical theory of language.
