Abstract

Since 2017, architects, community workers and local people have been working on a new approach to building in the Chinese village of Zhoushan.

A research base has become a testbed for the use of locally recycled and sourced materials, many collected within a 2km radius. Following experiments with recycled materials - from tiles and doors to fans and rice cookers - more recent research has focused on natural materials. An exhibition centre, with rammed-earth and stone walls and a roof insulated with straw, is in construction.

Current research is focused on rural sanitation; the team is working with 10 families to upgrade their composting toilet systems and hopes to extend this in the coming years. The team is also engaged in the protection of a 300-year-old tree in the village, and preservation work on a local historical site is due to begin next year.
