Fantasy and Illusion: Film Adaptations of Ni Kuang’s Science Fiction Novels

Abstract

<p>This chapter discusses Ni Kuang’s science fiction novels and their film adaptations, arguing that his works have provided a rich reservoir of imaginative material for the Chinese-language science fiction film genre. Hong Kong’s status as an international metropolis—with its free environment and vibrant information exchange—supplied sources for the transnational imagination found in Ni Kuang’s novels. His tendency to interpret extraordinary phenomena through concepts such as thought, spirit, and brainwaves also reflects the influence of both the Cold War context and Oriental philosophy.<br></p>
