| Abstract | This chapter examines the acquisition and use of foreign nationality by Chinese subjects in China’s last imperial, Qing dynasty (1644-1912). It argues that in the late Qing period, Chinese subjects acquired and used foreign nationality within China as a self-help measure to overcome restrictions and inequalities of Qing society and level the playing field. This debased Chinese nationality and eroded the foundation of Qing rule. The chapter seeks to contribute to the literature on nationality’s “compensatory”, “opportunity enhancing” function and supplement a perspective on the “unequal treaty system” in late imperial China. |
