| Abstract | Despite the rapid growth of superhero studies in recent years, the role of translation in the distribution and diversification of superhero genres and cultural franchises worldwide has rarely been addressed in the extant literature. To fill this gap, this study aimed to investigate the process and context of translating superhero stories. Using Chinese translations of American superhero films and television series as a case study, this chapter explores textual translation, audiovisual translation (subtitling and dubbing), and the associated transmission of cultural values between source and recipient contexts. The case analyses draw on cinematic and fan-driven distributions in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China in addition to diverse translations provided on streaming platforms. |
