Authors
Issue Date31-Oct-2025
PublisherRoutledge
Abstract

This study explores the participatory culture of “Bilibili remix” and its relationship with the danmu interface–supported website, Bilibili.com, thus demonstrating the intercultural dynamics of translational fandom, which involves transcultural fans in meaning-making, community-building, and world-making. In specific, this study examines how participants in Bilibili remix navigate political and platform censorship while maintaining a virtual sphere of participation. The findings reveal the confluence between participation and transgression in the convergence culture of Bilibili remix and demonstrate the challenges that participants encounter in complying with political and platform censorship. In conclusion, Bilibili remix represents a novel extension of the Chinese translational fandom, which heralds an active transcultural development within the audiovisual platform.
