Urban Regeneration and Its Realities in Urban China

Abstract

Based on the Western and Chinese literature of urban regeneration, this paper reviews'urban regeneration'in urban China since 1949.China’s open door policy has accelerated the pace of urbanization and led to an urgent need of restructuring the socialist urban fabric to cater for new socio-economic developments. Urban regeneration experience in Western countries suggests that institutional reforms and the mode of governance hold the key to realizing comprehensive urban regeneration objectives.

改革開放加速了城市化,也暴露了中國城市急需更新以應付社會經濟的轉型。文章比較了中西方'城市更新'的概念,總結了西方城市更新的經驗,認為城市更新機制以及城市管治體系變革,是保證城市更新的綜合目標得以實現的根本途徑。
