Abstract | Considering the difficulty of obtaining reliable experimental results on hybrid composites, a new principle termed 'twist-bonding equivalence' is proposed in this paper. By means of this theory, we have used a twisted hybrid fibre strand (a yarn) as a prototype for the composites so that the fibre-matrix bonding strength can be closely simulated by adjusting the twist on the strand. Using a previously established theoretical model for hybrid composites and incorporating the properties of the strand, we have predicted results reflecting the hybrid effects. The predictions are then compared with experiments done with these twisted strands to validate the theoretical model developed for hybrid composites. Some important factors and limitations of the technique based on the 'twist-bonding equivalence' are revealed and discussed. © 1998 The Royal Society. |
