AbstractThe results of 27 Asian (Biomet) total hip replacements in 25 Chinese patients were evaluated. The mean follow-up was 35.0 months (range, 24-51 months). The preoperative Harris hip score was 44.5, and the score at last follow-up was 92.1. All hips showed radiological features of bone ingrowth. The periprosthetic bone mineral density (BMD) was determined in 12 hips with more than 3 years follow-up using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Compared with a cementless stem that was not specially designed for Asians, the Asian femoral stem produced less reduction in BMD at all Gruen zones except for zone 3. The differences in the changes of BMD were significant at Gruen zones 5 and 6. Thus there was better preservation of the bone stock in the proximal femur using the Asian hip system.
